Chinese scientists have grown artificial sperm

In China, scientists have grown sperm in the laboratory. Male germ cells were created in the artificial conditions by means of which mice were subsequently inseminated. The experiment was successful and there was brought ultimately healthy offspring.
Spermatids were managed to grow from the stem cell by research team, led by Xiao-Yang Zhao. They hoisted 191 fertilized egg to female rodents. As a result 9 completely healthy mice have appeared, that are also able to acquire offspring in their reproductive age.

This method, according to scientists, will help to deal with male infertility. Although this application, only mice were currently subjected to this experiment. Their biology of development, as we know, has fundamental differences with the human. Nevertheless, the scientists hope that the new testing method on humans is a matter of time.

  1. I can't see the point in doing this! What for one should grow artificial sperms? There are sperm donors for it..I just wanna say we have enough material nowadays for performing the procedures. And to my mind it would be more useful to spend time on improving the ART methods rather than creating artificial sperms. I don't appreciate those very efforts. This is my personal point of view.
What IS really interesting is mitochondrial donation, for example. It's aimed at renovating patient's own eggs, give them more power and energy to develop into a healthy embryo. It's said too little percentage of DNA is passed through donor's mitochondria, the majority of genes remain to be those of the mother. So this approach is really incredible!

  2. Was there a real need for it?! We were also dealing with male infertility. But we were thankfully able to collect DH’s epididymal sperm through aspiration. Our first round of IVF resulted in one genetically correct male embryo. But unfortunately the cycle failed. Our second IVF cycle resulted in two genetically correct embryos. One boy and one girl. We had one embryo transferred but were unsure which embryo was transferred. So the thing I wanna say is that even though my husband was born without vas deferns on either side, they did get some beautiful sperms for IVF. I cannot see the reason why the swimmers should be grown artificially.
